Vile first appears as part of Sigma's rebellion, one of the many ex-Maverick Hunters who joined him and to serve as a formidable force in his army. " You worthless piece of scrap metal, did you think you could defeat me?" ―Vile, Mega Man X In the Rockman X3 manga, he brags about having a "demon" inside him and taunts X about having one too, which is also shown in the crossover Project X Zone 2. Here his emotions also often get the best of him, shown after his defeat when he admitted to Sigma he wasn't really sure what he intended to do after invading his fortress. In the remake Maverick Hunter X and in other media, Vile is also a rogue character with a strong hatred for X, though it is framed as more of an envy or jealousy than a simple grudge. He also performed a reckless kamikaze attack after his final defeat on the Moon, a somewhat uncharacteristic action since he usually flees to live another day. He is deceptively affable with X and Zero, sarcastically treating them as old friends while belittling Axl. While he claims a new world is coming, he also states that Reploids were made for destruction and has a generally nihilistic outlook. Vile seemed especially crazed during the Jakob Elevator incident, constantly ranting to the Hunters about the destruction of the world and how hopeless their endeavors to stop the Mavericks were. When he meets Axl, he instantly looks down on him for being a fairly new Hunter and taunts him when he gets riled up. Doppler, ignoring the doctor's plans and going off to fight X on his own terms. While Vile originally looked down on X, he developed a grudge against X after being resurrected and upgraded by Dr. Despite his callous and unruly nature, he is still a clever fighter, carefully retreating after Zero damages his Ride Armor and later trapping him in a cage to keep him out of the way.

Due to being a borderline Maverick, he was removed from duty and detained, being freed during Sigma's rebellion so he can cause as much destruction as he wishes. Though he used to be a Special A class member of the Maverick Hunters, Vile had an abnormality in his electronic brain that made him ruthlessly hunt down Mavericks and totally annihilate them, without regard for collateral damage. Vile is an arrogant and violent individual. This design is retained in Rockman X DiVE. In Mega Man X and X3, his shoulder cannon was incorporated directly into his shoulderpad, while in X8 and Maverick Hunter X, it was attached to his back and sat behind his shoulderpad. Vile's later appearances retain the overall basic appearance, always featuring his signature T-shaped visor and shoulder cannon, but take on different color schemes with stylized accents. Attached to his shoulder is a cannon featuring an ammo belt arching into a pack on his back. It is unknown if this is his face or if it just hides his real face, as in the Mega Man X3 opening video, his Mega Man X3 artwork, the Rockman X3 manga and the Ruby-Spears cartoon, Vile is seen with a singular glowing eye. Like some Maverick Hunters, Vile wears a helmet with a T-shaped visor that conceals his face in shadow. Vile is adorned in basic armor with a distinct purple sheen and gold highlights. Zero describes Vile as a Reploid who was designed to be a war machine. 6.5 Rockman X The Novel: Irregulars Report.
